The officially opening of the Harry Blaney Bridge took place on
Friday 15th May 2009 at 4.00pm by An
Taoiseach Brian Cowen T.D.
The new bridge, the biggest in Donegal is 340 metres long, comprising 5
spans with a main central span of 100metres. At a height of 20 metres above
high water level
to allow commercial vessels and to pass safely below the
bridge. The bridge also has a set of navigation lights installed to
serve as a guide to mariners. The spans Mulroy Bay between the
Rosguill peninsula (near Carrigart) and the Fanad peninsula. Saving
local people a round tripe of over 65 miles.
The Harry Blaney Bridge, named after Harry Blaney the Independent FF. TD
who secured funding from the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, Harry Blaney who is a brother of the late Neil T. Blaney
T.D. & MEP. ( also son of
the late Neil Blaney TD. of 1922 period). Also father of Nial Blaney
T.D. one of the sitting Fianna Fáil T.D.'s representing Donegal North
East in Dáil Éireann.
The Harry Blaney Bridge was built at a cost of €20 millionis and
has become tourist attraction for the Rosguill
and Fanad peninsula's. Nothing like this has happenes in this area since
the building of The Lackagh Bridge in the year 1776. Muskish Sand &
Gravel LTD (Brian McGinley) Umerafad, Creeslough,
Co. Donegal. local business who supplied most of the concrete for
the bridge had a tempory plant setup at the Fanad end.
